Practical:8 How to build a simple dashboard using Power BI.

In this blog, we’ll develop a dashboard on which we can view our data using various types of charts and have a better understanding of it.

Power BI dashboard

A Power BI dashboard is a single page, often called a canvas, that uses visualizations to tell a story. Because it is limited to one page, a well-designed dashboard contains only the most-important elements of that story. The visualizations on a dashboard come from reports and each report is based on one dataset.

How to Create a Power BI Dashboard

To start creating your Power BI Dashboard, there are a few things that you need to prepare including:
1. Microsoft Account
2. Power BI Desktop
3. Reports and datasets

The Microsoft account is essential in creating your Power BI Dashboard as you will need your account to download the Power BI Desktop software. Power BI Desktop is becoming the users’ most favorite Business Intelligence tool since it offers a lot of advantages over other BI tools available.

Having the software also helps a lot when creating reports and importing datasets to create visually stunning reports. You can also enjoy the option of the simplified data visualization capabilities available on the Cloud.

That way, you can do it even when your Operating System is not from Microsoft. Make sure to also have your datasets ready and available — I mean, it’s the main content of your dashboard after all.

Creating Dashboards

In Power BI, you can create a dashboard by pinning visualizations from BI reports that are published using the Power BI desktop. All the visualizations that are created using the Power BI service are also available for pinning to create dashboards.

1. Import data to Power BI Dashboard.

2. Importing excel sheet to PowerBI

3. Create Data Visualization in Power BI Dashboard.

Power BI provides several charts for comparative data charts, these are:
Bar, Column, Pie, Doughnut Charts, Tree map Visual, Scatter Charts

Power BI provided visuals for trend data charts are:
Line , Area, Combo, Ribbon, Waterfall and Funnel Charts

You can choose the visualization type by simply clicking on any Bar, Pie, or Donut chart or any other Data Visualization methods and types under the Visualizations tab on the right side of the panel.
Here, I have created a stacked bar chart of Sales by Product name.

Stacked bar chart of Sales and Profit by Product Name.

Thank you:)
